Bonfire Night 2026 with kids in Merseyside: the fireworks displays that are actually confirmed, and the councils that have gone quiet

Halton's free bridge display, the Saints stadium night and two Southport club nights are the organised events we could confirm for 2026. Here is what each costs, when the bangs start, where to park, and what to do if your child hates the noise.

Looking across Everton Park towards the city

Every year in the last week of October someone at the school gates asks where we are actually going for the fireworks, and every year the honest Merseyside answer gets shorter. Liverpool City Council stopped putting on displays years ago and what is left is a patchwork of stadium nights, a racecourse party and one free show fired off a bridge. We checked the official organiser pages on 29 and 31 October 2026. This is what is confirmed, what is not, and what to do with a child who covers their ears at a party popper.

The free one: Halton's bridge display, Sunday 1 November

Halton is the only council in the area we found still running its own public fireworks. The 2026 display is on Sunday 1 November at 7pm, part of the Culture 26 year, with official viewing areas on the Runcorn and Widnes promenades. The council says the show opens with a newly commissioned poem paired with a light show on the Silver Jubilee Bridge. Creamfields is a sponsor, so expect loud.

The 2026 announcement gave no parking or road closure details at the time of writing, so check the Halton newsroom before you set off; in previous years roads around both viewing areas closed in the late afternoon, so plan to walk in. On the Widnes bank the promenade sits beside Spike Island and Catalyst, whose observatory floor has sold tickets to watch the council display in past years. We found no 2026 listing, so ask Catalyst directly. A Sunday 7pm start before school is the downside; the price is the upside.

The big ticketed one: Saints, Thursday 5 November

St Helens RLFC's From The Ground Comes Light is at the BrewDog Stadium on the night itself, Thursday 5 November 2026, 5pm to 8pm. It is fully ticketed through the club's ticketing site or the ticket office, and the club calls it suitable for all ages. There is a Silcock funfair, a children's disco and face painters, then cheerleaders, a samba band and the Light Circus on the pitch, finishing with a laser light and pyrotechnics display. Food is from the stadium kiosks.

Tickets are £15 for adults and £10 for children aged 12 and under. Under 2s go free, but those tickets are only issued by phone or at the ticket office, and ages are checked at the gate. The stadium is cashless. An 8pm finish on a school night is as civilised as Bonfire Night gets, and a stadium means seats and toilets you can find.

Southport FC, Friday 6 November

Southport FC's Fireworks Night is on Friday 6 November 2026 at Haig Avenue, PR8 6JZ. Gates open at 6pm and the Bright Sparks display is at 8pm, with food vendors, entertainment and sheltered seating in the stands. Tickets are sold online in releases and the club is already on its final one, so do not leave it until the day. There is no on site parking and, at the time of writing, no disabled parking at the stadium either, so it is street parking around the ground. Outside food and drink are not allowed in. A Friday night with an 8pm display suits older children better than toddlers.

On the same night, Southport Rugby Club holds its own Fireworks Extravaganza at the club on Waterloo Road, Hillside. Gates open at 6pm, with bouncy castles, face painting and fairground games before the display. A family ticket for two adults and two under 16s is £28, adults are £9, ages 4 to 15 are £6 and under 3s go free. For a family of four it is the cheapest ticketed night on this list.

The councils with nothing to announce

Liverpool City Council said in a 2023 blog that it "made the decision a few years ago not to deliver fireworks displays" because of "the unsustainable costs of delivering and managing an event," and nothing on its sites for 2026 changes that. Its alternative is River of Light, free at the Pier Head from 23 October to 1 November 2026: light installations, not fireworks.

Sefton's fireworks moment was the British Musical Fireworks Championship in Victoria Park, Southport, in September; its news pages mention no November display. Wirral's events page listed nothing for October and November when we checked and names no display at New Brighton or Birkenhead Park. Knowsley's October 2026 news is all warnings about unauthorised bonfires. Aintree and Haydock Park have no fireworks night on the Jockey Club's 2026 pages, and Knowsley Safari, Farmer Ted's and Acorn Farm are doing Halloween and pumpkins rather than rockets.

For children who hate the bangs

We could not find a single organised low noise or quiet display confirmed in Merseyside for 2026. The best option for a noise sensitive child is distance, from a hill or the waterfront where the bangs arrive softened and late. Everton Park looks across the city and river, Bidston Hill does the same from the Wirral side, and the Pier Head by the Museum of Liverpool catches whatever goes up along the Mersey. Be honest about this plan: nothing is organised at any of them, no view of any particular display is guaranteed, it is dark, cold and often muddy, and the only fireworks promised are the back garden ones. Ear defenders, a flask and a short visit beat hoping.

Sparklers and under 5s

RoSPA and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are blunt about sparklers. RoSPA says "Do not give sparklers to children under five," "Wear gloves while handling sparklers" and "Put used sparklers in a bucket of cold water immediately after use." Merseyside Fire adds that sparklers "should never be given to children under the age of 5" and warns that used ones stay hot long after they stop glowing. RoSPA's wider advice is that "the safest place to enjoy fireworks is at a professionally organised public display," which is why the list above is the list.

The FamDays verdict

Four confirmed nights, one of them free, and a lot of councils saying nothing. Halton for the price and the bridge, Saints for the early finish and a seat, Southport Rugby Club for the cheapest family ticket, Southport FC for a Friday with the big kids. Book now, wrap up, leave the sparklers in the shop.

Everything families need to know before visiting

Which Merseyside fireworks displays are free in 2026?

Halton's display on Sunday 1 November at 7pm, watched from the Runcorn and Widnes promenades, is the only free council display we confirmed. River of Light at the Pier Head is free but has no fireworks.

Is there a fireworks display in Liverpool on Bonfire Night 2026?

Not one run by the city council, which stopped its displays several years ago because of cost. The nearest confirmed events are Halton on 1 November, Saints on 5 November, and Southport FC and Southport Rugby Club on 6 November.

What is the earliest finishing display for young children?

Saints runs from 5pm and finishes at 8pm on 5 November, the earliest finish on a school night. Halton starts at 7pm on Sunday 1 November, and both Southport displays are around 8pm on Friday 6 November.

Can I take sparklers to an organised display?

Assume not, and leave them at home. RoSPA and the fire service say children under 5 should not hold sparklers anywhere.

Before you set off

  • Book the big ones, turn up to the small onesThe safari park, the big soft plays and anything with a timed entry sell out in school holidays. Parks, beaches, most museums and the libraries never do. Every card says whether you need to book.
  • Go early or go lateMost paid attractions are quietest in the first hour and the last two. Free museums in the city centre are busiest between 11 and 2 on a wet Saturday.
  • Train beats car for the coast and the centreMerseyrail stops next to the beach at Crosby, Freshfield and Southport, and under the museums at Liverpool Central. Under 5s travel free and a Saveaway covers the day after 9.30 on weekdays and all day at weekends.
