Days out in Liverpool with a baby: where to feed, change, park the pram and actually enjoy yourself

The first year is about logistics. Here are the days out across Merseyside where the lift works, the changing table exists, the paths are flat and the entry is free for anyone who cannot walk yet, with the practical details that matter when your passenger is three months old.

Nobody tells you that a day out with a baby is mostly a day out with a bag. The question is never whether the place is interesting; it is whether there is a changing table, whether the pram fits through the door, and whether you can get a coffee without folding anything.

These are the places across Merseyside that pass those tests, according to their own websites and the parents who told us.

The city centre with a pram

The Museum of Liverpool is level all the way in from the waterfront, free, with lifts and the Little Liverpool gallery for when the baby turns into a toddler. Bluecoat on School Lane has baby changing on the ground floor, a cafe and a garden, and the Family Zone in the Hub for a crawler. Central Library has a Changing Places toilet, lifts and the Picton Reading Room, which is the quietest room in the city for a feed. The Walker is next door and free.

The parks that take a pram

Calderstones Park has The Reader's Storybarn, which runs Baby Drop In sessions (booked through The Reader), the Mansion House cafe from 8.30am and a small car park near the Storybarn. Otterspool Promenade is flat, wide, free to park at and has the river to look at while the baby sleeps. Sudley House is free, small and quiet, with gardens and a cafe.

Animals without the mud

Tam O'Shanter Urban Farm has level access through the main entrance to every animal area, all paths wheelchair and pram friendly, toilets, a cafe and free parking right by the entrance. Free.

Soft play for the not yet mobile

Bubbles World of Play in New Brighton has a dedicated baby and toddler area for under 3s, charges £2 for babies up to 5 months and £4.50 for 6 to 11 months on a term time weekday, and has a lift to the first floor and a free car park.

Baby friendly screenings

The Light in New Brighton runs baby friendly screenings alongside Toddler Time, and Picturehouse at FACT has free Toddler Time on Tuesdays once they are old enough to sit through 30 minutes.

Swimming

Volair Kirkby has a small toddler pool and under 5s swim free; Halton Leisure Centre in Widnes runs Aqua Babes sessions for babies over 4 months at £6.70 for 30 minutes in the smaller, shallower pool.

Worth the ticket

Eureka! Science and Discovery lets babies under 1 in free, has lifts to both floors, a Chill Out room and sensory bags, and your own ticket becomes a 12 month pass. Port Sunlight Museum is free for under 5s and step free. The Mersey Ferry is 50 minutes, under 5s free, toilets on board, and the tickets are open dated so you can wait for a calm day.

The FamDays verdict

Pick somewhere flat, free and with a coffee, and treat anything beyond an hour as a bonus. The Museum of Liverpool and a walk along the waterfront is the baby day out this city was built for.

Before you set off

  • Book the big ones, turn up to the small onesThe safari park, the big soft plays and anything with a timed entry sell out in school holidays. Parks, beaches, most museums and the libraries never do. Every card says whether you need to book.
  • Train beats car for the coast and the centreMerseyrail stops next to the beach at Crosby, Freshfield and Southport, and under the museums at Liverpool Central. Under 5s travel free and a Saveaway covers the day after 9.30 on weekdays and all day at weekends.
  • How we checkEvery listing is rechecked against the venue's own website every week, and each card shows the date it was last confirmed. If something has changed since, the Tell us link on every page reaches a person who fixes it.
